FAQ

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How does AstraFIFO help you prepare?

We help you prepare a targeted CV, plan applications and understand the requirements of FIFO roles. The process starts with an assessment of your experience and goals. Hiring depends on employer decisions and the requirements of each position.

Do mining companies hire women?

Yes. Australian mining companies regularly hire women and in recent years have been actively promoting greater diversity and inclusion in the sector. Working conditions are regulated and based on safety standards and equal opportunity, and many mining companies have specific programs to increase female participation in the industry.

What does FIFO mean?

FIFO means “Fly-In Fly-Out”: workers travel to a site by air and return after their roster. Departure locations, transport, accommodation and facilities vary by site and employer. Always check the conditions of the job offer.

Can I enter the mining industry without experience?

There are entry-level roles for candidates without mining experience, such as utility worker, kitchen hand and cleaner. Requirements vary by role and employer and can include transferable experience, work rights, certificates and medical checks. Preparing a CV and applications does not guarantee employment.

Why should I choose mining over a city job?

FIFO work can offer a different roster structure and, under some contracts, accommodation and meals during the roster. Pay, costs and potential savings depend on the role, contract and personal circumstances. Compare the conditions of job offers before deciding.

Can mining work count towards a second Working Holiday visa?

Some mining activities in regional areas can qualify as specified work for subclass 417. Not every role or location qualifies. Check the required periods, work evidence and applicable rules with Home Affairs before accepting a position. Home Affairs Australia

Is working in Australian mines really that demanding?

FIFO can involve long shifts and consecutive days away from home. Before applying, consider the roster, duties, site conditions and health and safety requirements stated in the offer. Ask the employer to clarify the applicable conditions.
